Bollywood actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood has made a strong appeal to the Indian government, urging the implementation of strict age restrictions for social media usage. In a statement shared on the platform X (formerly Twitter), the actor advocated for a ban on social media access for children under the age of 16.

Sood drew a direct comparison to Australia, which recently passed legislation to restrict social media access for minors. He suggested that it is time for India to consider similar measures to safeguard the mental well-being and development of the younger generation.

Focus on Real Childhoods

The actor emphasized that children deserve to experience ‘real childhoods’ rather than being consumed by the digital world. He highlighted the growing concern of screen addiction among minors and how it impacts their formative years.

According to Sood, restricting access would help foster stronger family bonds and allow children the freedom to grow without the pressures of online platforms. He positioned this potential policy change as a necessary step for the nation’s future.

“Countries like Australia have already banned social media for kids under 16 — and it’s time India considers the same. Our children deserve real childhoods, stronger family bonds, and freedom from screen addiction.” — Sonu Sood

Appeal to Government

Praising the current administration’s track record, Sood expressed confidence in the government’s ability to take bold steps. He noted that the government has previously taken ‘incredible steps’ for the nation’s progress and suggested that regulating social media for minors could be another powerful example set by India.

“Let’s protect our kids today for a better India tomorrow,” he added, framing the request as a crucial intervention for the country’s long-term social health. The actor’s comments come amidst a global debate regarding the impact of algorithms and infinite scrolling on the mental health of teenagers and children.
